WHO ARE YOU, WHERE ARE YOU FROM, & WHAT DO YOU DO? I am a medical illustrator and sculptor by training. I grew up in South Georgia but have been in the CSRA the past 7 years. I love making things with my hands. Clay is my primary medium. I make functional works of art for the home.
DESCRIBE YOUR PROCESS. I most often use a pottery wheel to form shapes that I modify into the final piece. Then, I glaze pieces with a high temperature glaze or use a low temperature Raku process. My favorite process is Obvara Raku. The piece is pulled out of a 1600 degree kiln when it’s red hot and it dipped into a fermented flour, yeast, and water mixture. This seals the pot and provide a rich brown and tan color pattern. This was a process developed in the Baltic region in the Middle Ages.
WHAT INSPIRES YOU? Nature, especially water or the sea.
FUN FACT ABOUT YOU. I can wiggle my ears👂🏻.
FAVORITE THING ABOUT DOWNTOWN AUGUSTA. The food! I love the variety of restaurants.
WHY DO YOU LOVE TO DESIGN, CREATE + MAKE? I enjoy making sculptures, but I find the most rewarding creations are works of art that will be used on a regular basis. It’s great to hear when a client says I use that mug morning and night.
WHAT IS ONE PIECE OF ADVICE YOU WOULD SHARE WITH OTHER ARTISTS + MAKERS?
Love what you do and you will never work a day in your life.
