What I create depends on my mood for the day or how a piece of upcycled material speaks to me. Some days I pull out my scrap box of paper or fabric and work from there. And, other days I flip through my collection of paper crafting stamps and let a stamp tell me it wants to be the feature on a brooch. Each patch I make is designed by me and made with cotton floss and eco-felt, which is made from recycled plastic bottles. I love being able to recycle my leftover felt scraps, too! Originally from Holland, MI (go Dutch!), my husband and I moved to Evans, Georgia in 2021. Taking after my grandfather and my aunt, I found a love in Tiffany-style stained glass and make all sorts of sun catchers, candle holders, plant stakes… whatever strikes my fancy! DESCRIBE YOUR PROCESS. Stained glass is a long process which involves patterning, glass breaking, grinding the edges of each piece, putting on copper foil, soldering, and lastly adding those finishing touches. It feels therapeutic and you can really get into a rhythm with each step. I have the most fun drawing out my own designs and hearing the snap of a successful glass break. WHAT INSPIRES YOU?With stained glass I feel mostly inspired by nature (hence a lot of floral and animal pieces). It’s so easy to just keep making because there’s an endless variety of things you can do with glass- traditional or modern, clear or colorful. Maybe someday I’ll find a set style but right now I love doing a little of everything. FUN FACT ABOUT YOU. The name Eight Paws Market is inspired by our two fur babies- our old English sheepdog named Olive and our chonky grey cat, Dusty Rose. If I’m frustrated, I’ll break glass for a pattern. If I need to focus my mind, I’ll grind the glass edges to everything fits together puzzle-perfect. And absolutely nothing feels better than polishing a piece and hanging it in the window to catch some light. True accomplishment! Hi, My name is Vanessa! I have a wonderful husband of 12 years, Travis, and three beautiful children together. I was born and raised in northeast Pennsylvania, and have spent about the last six years living in the south – two year in Evans, and the rest before that in Alabama. DESCRIBE YOUR PROCESS. Most of my creations start at the fabric store. I love being able to feel all of the fabrics and get a real life view of the quality and softness. Sometimes I have an idea in my head of what I would like to make, but sometimes I just love a fabric so much that I bring it home with me even if an idea hasn’t struck yet. Then I wash and dry the material in clear scent free detergent to get rid of yuckies and to preshrink the fabric. This helps not only me while sewing, but ensures the end product doesn’t get wonky after washing, like some store bought items may. WHAT INSPIRES YOU? Having three children of my own, I love to see the joy on their faces when Mommy creates something they designed themselves. Whenever I make something to sell I try to keep that in mind, and hope the same for whatever child gets the pleasure of wearing it. FUN FACT ABOUT YOU. I grew up with my mother’s sewing machine in my bedroom. It’s something that I had completely forgotten about until recently. Being the youngest, my mother gave up her sewing room in order to give me my own room. Luckily for me, this was the 80’s and there was no need to actually remove it from the room. I remember playing with the hand wheel and watching the needle move up and down, over and over again. FAVORITE THING ABOUT DOWNTOWN AUGUSTA. I love the wide variety of places to eat! WHY DO YOU LOVE TO DESIGN, CREATE + MAKE? I have always had a love of art. Drawing (specifically animals and house floorplans) was my favorite thing to do when I was younger. Over the years things have evolved, and now having children of my own, I fell in love with sewing and being able to create beautiful things for them to wear.
