After moving to Los Angeles for work, I became inspired by the surplus textile markets in the Fashion District and vintage fabric finds at estate sales. I began creating my own patterns for bags and accessories and hand dyeing or repurposing fabrics to turn into one of a kind goods for humans and their homes. After moving to South Carolina in 2019, I became inspired by southern art and craft, a new color palette, and local markets and once again put a new spin on some of my previous designs to produce the California/Southern style that is unique to The Indigo Tribe. DESCRIBE YOUR PROCESS. Every year I spend time developing new patterns as well as a color palette that I want to bring to life. I start to play with Muslim to find the shapes and themes I want to work with, then hand dye large amounts of cotton twill, muslin, and linen to use as my foundation. This year I was Inspired by the ideas of mirror imaging and weaving so I began to create collections around those themes with an emphasis on simple shapes that are practical for everyday. WHAT INSPIRES YOU?Japanese design, taking other art forms and applying them to textiles (basket weaving, watercolor painting, etc) natural colors mixed with preppy southern pinks and pastels. FUN FACT ABOUT YOU.I’m almost completely self-taught and learned basic sewing by watching my Mom and Grandma growing up! My first products were all throw pillows because at the time all I could sew were squares and rectangles! My name is Christina Dezutter, Chrissey, for short. I was born and raised in Augusta, GA, but I’ve travels the world and back with my husband as he pursued his Military career. When he retired, we returned to the area and now live in Harlem. I currently teach ceramics for the Columbia County Senior Center and make stoneware pottery in my home studio. DESCRIBE YOUR PROCESS. Each piece is made of stoneware and is either slab built or wheel thrown. Once dry it goes into the kiln for bisque fire. I take it out and brush on a combination of glazes and return it to the kiln for glaze firing. It reaches cone 6, roughly 2200°F and slowly cools. Once finished, I bring it out to sell. WHAT INSPIRES YOU? In general, life, happy people, fresh air, and my family. In my work, I’m interested in achieving more detail and larger throws and I tend to follow many pottery maters that achieve the techniques I aspire to. FUN FACT ABOUT YOU. I’ve been to 17 countries and more than 200 cities. My husband and I once spent a week in Japan completely by accident. Our MAC flight made an unplanned stop, with no connection. I can see the progress made from day to day and I can exercise my creativity in making something however I want. WHAT IS ONE PIECE OF ADVICE YOU WOULD SHARE WITH OTHER ARTISTS + MAKERS?The best advice I’ve received is to do something related to your craft every day. So, for me, it can be as simple as ironing a seam, trimming threads, or picking up my workspace floor. My mission is to make “wearable art”, pieces that last for generations and can inspire my customers to celebrate their uniqueness everyday! DESCRIBE YOUR PROCESS.Sometimes I see art, colors, an outfit, that inspires me and then I source a pair of shades or blue light glasses that I want like “glimmer” to bring my vision to life. Then I buff and prep the shades, choose the color and size rhinestones and application method. Most of the time I choose the corner pieces and apply them first and then after they set, I go in an hand place each and every rhinestone. WHAT INSPIRES YOU?Since I was a child I had a passion for to re-constructing clothing and accessories to make it my own. My love for color combined with my obsession with 1950’s fashion and Tokyo street style. I feel like statement pieces can bring the entire look together. We wanted to bottle up that cozy feeling and share it with others. Since 2014, Park & Madison has been crafting premium candles with a focus on high quality ingredients. We started as a late-night project between me and my husband in our NYC apartment. We spent hours coming up with candle blends while drinking wine and eventually decided to give it a name. The words Park & Madison were something I said often; during a late night cab ride telling the driver ” 118th street, between Park & Madison.” It felt fitting to name our brand after the place that we called home for so long. While NYC was always ‘home’, we have relocated to Charleston, SC. At Park & Madison, we make more than just candles-each scent is thoughtfully curated and crafted to capture that cozy feeling of ‘home.’ DESCRIBE YOUR PROCESS.For me, the process begins with inspiration. I believe that crafting the perfect candle is an art form that starts with a spark of creativity. I dedicate a significant portion of my time to researching and developing the perfect scents for my candles. This process involves experimenting with different fragrance oils, mixing them to achieve the desired aroma, and conducting tests to ensure the scent’s longevity when the candle is burned. Once the scent profiles are finalized, I carefully source high-quality materials such as natural wax, wicks, and vessels. It’s important to me to use eco-friendly and sustainable materials. The actual candle-making process is a blend of science and math. I measure the ingredients precisely, taking into account factors like the size of the vessel and the fragrance used. I also pay close attention to temperature and pouring techniques to create a consistent product. Post-production involves checking quality, cutting wicks and getting them labeled and ready to ship out. The candle-making process is certainly not quick, and it can take months of research, development and testing to launch a new scent. WHAT INSPIRES YOU?I see inspiration everywhere, and for me, it often starts with the link between scent and memory. Scents have this ability to transport us back to specific moments in time, evoking emotions we had almost forgotten about. It can remind you of a person, a place, or a particular moment in your life. I’m always chasing after this idea, the idea that with a simple candle, I can capture those memories and emotions for people and give them that feeling of “home.” It’s a way of bottling nostalgia, preserving moments, and creating new memories. I also find so much inspiration in the changing seasons. Each season brings its own unique scents and mood and I want to capture that. FUN FACT ABOUT YOU.My enneagram type is 5 (with a little bit of 6) and this is so accurate. I also 100% believe in ghosts, aliens and Bigfoot and I’m even part of a Paranormal Investigation Team!
