My name is Becca and I am an artist and educator from Augusta. I make colorful and sometimes functional fine art, often including plants, home decor and patterns. DESCRIBE YOUR PROCESS. I use two main art mediums so I have two fairly distinct process. For painting, I use oil paint and like to build up with lots of layers often starting with a bright pink base coat. I add layers of color schemes, loose marks and patterns to each of my paintings in hopefully unexpected but balanced ways. For ceramics, each piece is thrown on the potters wheel with stoneware clay. then I add layers of modeled clay, and underglaze patterns to build up my pieces, similarly to my paintings. I add layers of glazes to each. I love to experiment at this step! Each piece is fired in a kiln twice and is food safe. WHAT INSPIRES YOU? I am often inspired by home decor accounts on instagram and walks through antiques store. I love to play with sentimental color schemes and objects. I am also immensely inspired by leave and plants so I vistit local greenhouses often. FUN FACT ABOUT YOU. I spent most of college perfecting my chocolate chip cookie recipe and I personally think they are the best! FAVORITE THING ABOUT DOWNTOWN AUGUSTA. I love the food and coffee option. Personally Buona coffee and Pizza Joint are my favorites. WHY DO YOU LOVE TO DESIGN, CREATE + MAKE? Art and making has been ingrained in me since birth and I always have that “itch” to get into the studio and try something new. Art is vital to how I and many communicate. I love that I am able to spread joy and happiness through my work. WHAT IS ONE PIECE OF ADVICE YOU WOULD SHARE WITH OTHER ARTISTS + MAKERS? Simply begin. Most people are worried about it not looking a certain way or that they haven’t been “good at it” before. But that is not really the point of art. Art should be more similar to play and exploration. I’m Jennifer. I’m from Columbia, SC. I have spent my entire life in the South, with stints in both the Carolinas and several years in Florida. I trained as a children and family therapist, but now find myself studying the craft of machine embroidery. I work out of my home studio in Columbia. DESCRIBE YOUR PROCESS.I started from scratch with learning how to digitize my designs and stitch them out, so I mostly learned by screwing things up again and again. I take a lot of inspiration from so much of what I love about the South. I sketch designs and then digitize a first stitch out. Sometimes designs come together quickly (yay!), but sometimes I wrestle to figure out the best way to translate the design to stitches or what color stories to use. It has been a humbling process, but also so full of growth. Wait — am I talking about my art or myself? WHAT INSPIRES YOU?ALL THE THINGS. I find inspiration from nature, architecture, my loved ones, fellow artists. The South is full of incredible people doing interesting things. We are lucky to live in such a beautiful place! FUN FACT ABOUT YOU.I hiked the Chilkoot Trail, which is the same route the gold miners took through Alaska and British Columbia during the Klondike Gold Rush of the 19th century. After moving to Los Angeles for work, I became inspired by the surplus textile markets in the Fashion District and vintage fabric finds at estate sales. I began creating my own patterns for bags and accessories and hand dyeing or repurposing fabrics to turn into one of a kind goods for humans and their homes. After moving to South Carolina in 2019, I became inspired by southern art and craft, a new color palette, and local markets and once again put a new spin on some of my previous designs to produce the California/Southern style that is unique to The Indigo Tribe. DESCRIBE YOUR PROCESS. Every year I spend time developing new patterns as well as a color palette that I want to bring to life. I start to play with Muslim to find the shapes and themes I want to work with, then hand dye large amounts of cotton twill, muslin, and linen to use as my foundation. This year I was Inspired by the ideas of mirror imaging and weaving so I began to create collections around those themes with an emphasis on simple shapes that are practical for everyday. WHAT INSPIRES YOU?Japanese design, taking other art forms and applying them to textiles (basket weaving, watercolor painting, etc) natural colors mixed with preppy southern pinks and pastels. FUN FACT ABOUT YOU.I’m almost completely self-taught and learned basic sewing by watching my Mom and Grandma growing up! My first products were all throw pillows because at the time all I could sew were squares and rectangles! My name is Christina Dezutter, Chrissey, for short. I was born and raised in Augusta, GA, but I’ve travels the world and back with my husband as he pursued his Military career. When he retired, we returned to the area and now live in Harlem. I currently teach ceramics for the Columbia County Senior Center and make stoneware pottery in my home studio. DESCRIBE YOUR PROCESS. Each piece is made of stoneware and is either slab built or wheel thrown. Once dry it goes into the kiln for bisque fire. I take it out and brush on a combination of glazes and return it to the kiln for glaze firing. It reaches cone 6, roughly 2200°F and slowly cools. Once finished, I bring it out to sell. WHAT INSPIRES YOU? In general, life, happy people, fresh air, and my family. In my work, I’m interested in achieving more detail and larger throws and I tend to follow many pottery maters that achieve the techniques I aspire to. FUN FACT ABOUT YOU. I’ve been to 17 countries and more than 200 cities. My husband and I once spent a week in Japan completely by accident. Our MAC flight made an unplanned stop, with no connection. FAVORITE THING ABOUT DOWNTOWN AUGUSTA. The restaurants and record stores. WHY DO YOU LOVE TO DESIGN, CREATE + MAKE? It allows me the freedom to get it out of head and into my hands. I love watching other hold and enjoy something I’ve made. There’s no bigger compliment than someone wanting something that you thought of and made with your hands. My name is Kristie Linn and I’m originally from Vancouver, WA. I moved to Augusta in 2011 and married my high school sweetheart. He retired from the Navy in 2014 and we moved back to Washington to be closer to family and friends and to figure out what we wanted to do “when we grew up.” After our boys both graduated high school and decided to move to Montana, we got the opportunity to come back to Augusta and now here we are! When I’m not traveling back and forth to Montana to visit the kids, I’m a full-time creator and do accounting and business managing on the side. Ps…we still don’t know what we want to do when we grow up (tsk tsk). DESCRIBE YOUR PROCESS. My process really depends on what I’m creating and who I’m creating a piece for. I blend a lot of my own designs with the designs of other talented designers to create signs, earrings, keychains, and really anything I can cut with a laser. Each piece is laser cut from a variety of wood types and either stained or hand-painted using a variety of paint styles and techniques (chalk, watercolor, acrylic, etc.). WHAT INSPIRES YOU? Seeing people smile. FUN FACT ABOUT YOU. I love being a tourist. This can be traveling to another country, driving across the states, or even being a tourist in my own town. I just love seeing and learning. FAVORITE THING ABOUT DOWNTOWN AUGUSTA. Oh geez…the history. I worked for the Augusta Museum of History for 3 years and didn’t realize how much I love learning about the area. My close second would have to be all the murals. WHY DO YOU LOVE TO DESIGN, CREATE + MAKE? This is my escape, kind of like reading a book. I get to go into my own little world and create anything my heart desires. The best reward, though, is either seeing someone wearing a pair of my earrings, hanging one of my signs, or even asking me to create something special for a loved one. I start with a specimen ~ either found locally, received from a local farm or sustainably sourced from aviaries or pet food suppliers. Once I prepare my specimens, I can start the process of bug pinning or the taxidermy process! Once they are dried and cured, I’m able to create their new forever enclosures for their beauty to be preserved for a lifetime. WHAT INSPIRES YOU? I’m inspired by early Victorian taxidermy and Mother Nature. I’m also inspired by the idea of changing the stigma of bugs and small taxidermy. I want people to see their beauty and appreciate how beautiful every living creature is. FUN FACT ABOUT YOU. I love multiple mediums but when I started doing taxidermy, I was able to join my love for sculpture, sewing, composition and creativity.
