Meet The Maker

WHO ARE YOU, WHERE ARE YOU FROM, & WHAT DO YOU DO?
I am Jade Alexandra, owner of GeoWhimsyBoutique! I was born and raised here in Augusta. From an early age it was clear to everyone around me that I would excel at and be involved with the arts in some form. My artistic journey began with becoming enamored with the creation of ceramic art in high school and college, evolved into learning all about crystals, learning to wrap and weave them into intricate works of art, and finally landing me in the realm of polymer clay. I appreciate the incredible range that polymer clay affords. One could look at 4 clay artists and easily see 4 unique artistic voices.

DESCRIBE YOUR PROCESS.
I hand make my polymer clay earrings, start to finish. From hand mixing each color from the existing primary colors, cutting out shapes within the clay, hand sculpting individual details, to baking, sanding, assembling, and carding, I handle the whole process, each step of the way.

WHAT INSPIRES YOU?
Most of my art is at least partially inspired by cottagecore and whimsigoth imagery. I get most excited to make pieces involving mushrooms, frogs, snails, bats, and the celestial plane.

FUN FACT ABOUT YOU.
While my art business is centered around polymer clay earrings, I also make and teach wire wrapping, and create fun, nerdy cross stitched and crocheted pieces just for me!

FAVORITE THING ABOUT DOWNTOWN AUGUSTA.
There are so many wonderful establishments that make up our beautiful downtown Augusta. From venues to bars to restaurants, discovering the ins and outs of our downtown can fill out many weekends.

WHY DO YOU LOVE TO DESIGN, CREATE + MAKE?
I adore watching as a table feel of art supplies that don’t look like much turn into something worthwhile after I’ve worked with it. The satisfaction I get seeing a design transferred from my minds eye into existence is one of the best parts of the creation process.

WHAT IS ONE PIECE OF ADVICE YOU WOULD SHARE WITH OTHER ARTISTS + MAKERS?
I encourage everyone, newbies and veterans alike, to be willing to fail. Embrace failure in your art. It’s so important to let go of the need for your piece to turn out exactly how you planned it. Sometimes your art knows what it needs to be better than you do, and you’ll enjoy the process far more if you allow for flexibility, and see that “failure” from another perspective: Opportunity.
