Meet The Artist

WHO ARE YOU, WHERE ARE YOU FROM, & WHAT DO YOU DO?
Hi, I’m Martha! I’m an ATLien, if you know you know, who recently relocated to Augusta after spending a few years in Chattanooga, TN. By day I’m an elementary school art educator and by night an artist, as well as a CZT- Certified Zentangle Teacher. My creative work is rooted in the exploration of patterns, plants, and colors that surround me daily.

DESCRIBE YOUR PROCESS.
Most of my work is based in drawing patterns which allows me to feel peace and clarity amidst the chaos of everyday life. By filling a page with repeated lines, shapes, and colors, I’m able to find order and calm my busy mind. I create minimalist abstract paintings using a variety of media as well as hand-built ceramic work decorated with Zentangles.

WHAT INSPIRES YOU?
I draw inspiration from patterns found on vintage textiles and Indian block prints, the bold organic cutouts of Henri Matisse, and the striking yet minimalist geometric paintings of Frank Stella.

FUN FACT ABOUT YOU.
I once paddled 32 miles down the Tennessee River on a stand up paddle board!

FAVORITE THING ABOUT DOWNTOWN AUGUSTA.
I love walking the streets of downtown Augusta and admiring the beautiful old buildings and their unique architectural accents. Their patterns and personalties inspire me and I can’t wait for more people to embrace the charm of downtown!

WHY DO YOU LOVE TO DESIGN, CREATE + MAKE?
I don’t do it because I love it. I mean, of course, I love it, but really I create because I can’t not do it! I was created to create and I’m so grateful I am able to share that with my community.

WHAT IS ONE PIECE OF ADVICE YOU WOULD SHARE WITH OTHER ARTISTS + MAKERS?
Just keep creating! Even when it’s hard, when you’re busy, when you’re sad, when you think no one else likes your work, when you hate your own work, just keep making things.
