WHO ARE YOU, WHERE ARE YOU FROM, & WHAT DO YOU DO?
My name is Kaitlin Crawford. I’m from Grovetown, GA. I hand make polymer clay jewelry and trinkets with a wide variety of designs and styles.
DESCRIBE YOUR PROCESS.
With polymer clay, you first have to condition the clay and mix colors to find the one you want. Most designs start with a cutter to ensure some consistency, but then I add my own touch using hand sculpting techniques. After it’s ready, it has to bake. Some items require layering and multiple bakes and other need a finish of resin. Then they get the edges cleaned, holes drilled, and hypoallergenic finishes attached.
WHAT INSPIRES YOU?
I take inspiration from everything! I am a big fan of dopamine dressing and creating jewelry I always dreamed of owning. I look at current pop culture trends and looks from my childhood. I also take from nature and books.
FUN FACT ABOUT YOU.
I started learning polymer clay so I could make my best friend a custom pair of earrings for her wedding in 2022.
FAVORITE THING ABOUT DOWNTOWN AUGUSTA.
I love supporting local and seeing downtown grow. Nacho Mama’s is my favorite eating spot before exploring and finishing up with a slice of cake from Boll Weevil. I also loved all the old trees and hope to see new ones.
WHY DO YOU LOVE TO DESIGN, CREATE + MAKE?
My goal from the start was always to bring joy and a smile to peoples faces. This work has been far more rewarding and healing than I could have ever imagined. I am truly overwhelmed when someone resonates with my work and wears it to present their most authentic self to the world.
WHAT IS ONE PIECE OF ADVICE YOU WOULD SHARE WITH OTHER ARTISTS + MAKERS?
Don’t stress to much. Especially at the beginning. Just make what you want to see in the world and you will find your people. Also talk to as many people as you can and build a community.
I am always open to suggestions and commissions. I’ve gotten some of my best ideas from chats at markets! But more importantly, markets have also brought me some great friendships, so stop by and say hi!
