Meet the Artist:

WHO ARE YOU, WHERE ARE YOU FROM, & WHAT DO YOU DO?
My name is Kattie Herring and I am from Hephzibah, GA and now live in North Augusta, S.C. By day, I am special education teacher in Columbia County. I like to make pots and play with clay, after work and on the weekends.

DESCRIBE YOUR PROCESS.
My process is a very traditional process that has been handed down to me from my Great Grandmother and Great Uncle. I throw on the same wheels they used and use the same tools they did. I love the process of making something functional from just a heap of mud that will turn into a beautiful, usable mug. I love that heat, over 2000 degrees, can turn clay into ceramics.

WHAT INSPIRES YOU?
Tradition inspires me. The tradition that my family members have handed down to me. Also, the daily improvement I see in my craft is inspiring.

FUN FACT ABOUT YOU.
I love road trips. Once, my family and I took a road trip from Hephzibah, GA to Ocatal, Nicaragua.

FAVORITE THING ABOUT DOWNTOWN AUGUSTA.
Hands down, Knuckle Sandwiches

WHY DO YOU LOVE TO DESIGN, CREATE + MAKE?
I love being able to go out to my studio and get lost in the process.

WHAT IS ONE PIECE OF ADVICE YOU WOULD SHARE WITH OTHER ARTISTS + MAKERS?
Keep at it. Don’t let the pretty pictures and videos of your craft on Instagram discourage you or make you feel less than. These people have practiced and perfected their craft…. and use filters and time-lapse…
