WHO ARE YOU, WHERE ARE YOU FROM, & WHAT DO YOU DO?
Hi, I’m Carrie! I live in Rock Hill, SC and have been making one of a kind wood air plant hangers since 2017.
DESCRIBE YOUR PROCESS.
Each piece begins with salvaged wood, scraps of wood from local woodworkers, wood from construction dumpsters or leftover pieces from various home projects. These pieces get sawn to a workable thickness on my table saw, then I draw out shapes and cut out each piece by hand on my bandsaw, drill holes for hanging hardware, sanded smooth and oiled with a beeswax/orange oil blend to enhance the natural color and woodgrain.
WHAT INSPIRES YOU?
Nature and our surroundings play a big part in inspiring my work. In some cases, the inspiration is obvious like my moon phase pieces, and others are a little more abstract.
FUN FACT ABOUT YOU.
My husband and I just bought a sailboat.
FAVORITE THING ABOUT DOWNTOWN AUGUSTA.
The riverfront and the charming small businesses around town have me looking forward to visiting the area for the first time.
WHY DO YOU LOVE TO DESIGN, CREATE + MAKE?
It’s an expression of myself and what I love. Creating the pieces is a soothing and almost meditative experience. Seeing the pieces come together is exciting and I get giddy when I think up a new design. And then when customers see my pieces and connect with one or more of them, their eyes light up, they gasp in aw, that brings me pure joy!
WHAT IS ONE PIECE OF ADVICE YOU WOULD SHARE WITH OTHER ARTISTS + MAKERS?
Creativity comes and goes in waves, and that’s ok.
