I spent twelve years as a Spanish educator before becoming a ceramicist and sculptor. Largely self-taught, I have developed my own processes and techniques. Drawing inspiration from the intricate systems of coral reefs and forest mycelium networks, I create joyfully detailed functional ceramics that foster a sense of playful wonder in everyday objects. With an emphasis on detail, growth, and movement, my creations are primarily functional and meant to be held and used. I rarely plan a piece before I start, preferring to follow the patterns and inspiration that arise in the moment. Hi Y’all, we are McDonough Pottery from Jackson,SC. Johanne and Kris moved here from Buffalo, NY 11 years ago. There was all ready a small studio way in the back yard and Kris asked me “what are we going to do with this?” I was an art teacher and always loved pottery so that cute little studio turned into a pottery and we’ve been busy ever since. DESCRIBE YOUR PROCESS. Our process is one of wheel made pottery and hand formed pottery. I was doing all the throwing when Kris wanted to do something, hand building was just perfect for her. The both of us create works and after the first fire Kris, who has become a master glazer takes over from there, creating beautiful colors on all our wares. Some of the cups/mugs that I throw on the wheel, get hand painted original designs painted on the surface while the clay is raw. This enables the bright cheery colors and designs on our mugs, then they are fired and glaze applied. WHAT INSPIRES YOU? Often you can tell by the designs, what I’ve been reading, viewing, or watching on documentaries. Birds outside the studio, flowers in the yard, historic information like Inuit or Native folklore, Geechee culture, animals, dogs, cows anything that triggers a moments notice. A lot of times it’s the influence of my daily prayer, or something that Kris brings to my attention. I’ve always expressed myself with painting, now the clay surface is my canvas. FUN FACT ABOUT YOU. I instantly became addicted! Before I knew it, my felt patches and custom embroidery pieces were eclipsing my vintage business in a big way and I had to face the facts that embroidery was the way to go — and here we are! Each patch I make is designed by me and made with cotton floss and eco-felt, which is made from recycled plastic bottles. I love being able to recycle my leftover felt scraps, too! I’m semi-retired. A true patron of all of the arts. Grandma to three, Kayla, Ibrahim and Sofia. DESCRIBE YOUR PROCESS.You can knit with Chunky Chenille yarn using your hands or using large knitting needles. I use the hand knitting process. My custom pieces with faces, hearts, flowers etc., are made by creating a chain of yarn, fashioning the yarn into the designs I want, then sewing the design with a needle and thread onto the throw. WHAT INSPIRES YOU?I am inspired by many things. Nature, loved ones, meeting new friends, sharing stories that prove to me that we are more alike than different. Originally from Holland, MI (go Dutch!), my husband and I moved to Evans, Georgia in 2021. Taking after my grandfather and my aunt, I found a love in Tiffany-style stained glass and make all sorts of sun catchers, candle holders, plant stakes… whatever strikes my fancy! DESCRIBE YOUR PROCESS. Stained glass is a long process which involves patterning, glass breaking, grinding the edges of each piece, putting on copper foil, soldering, and lastly adding those finishing touches. It feels therapeutic and you can really get into a rhythm with each step. I have the most fun drawing out my own designs and hearing the snap of a successful glass break. WHAT INSPIRES YOU?With stained glass I feel mostly inspired by nature (hence a lot of floral and animal pieces). It’s so easy to just keep making because there’s an endless variety of things you can do with glass- traditional or modern, clear or colorful. Maybe someday I’ll find a set style but right now I love doing a little of everything. FUN FACT ABOUT YOU. The name Eight Paws Market is inspired by our two fur babies- our old English sheepdog named Olive and our chonky grey cat, Dusty Rose. Olive often makes appearances at outdoor markets and loves to greet everyone when she’s not sleeping FAVORITE THING ABOUT DOWNTOWN AUGUSTA.The food scene is really up and coming. There’s something for everyone from tacos to sushi to ramen and insane cocktails… so you never run out of choices with date night! WHY DO YOU LOVE TO DESIGN, CREATE + MAKE?Creating is something that the soul needs and craves. Stained glass especially helps me unwind in different ways. If I’m frustrated, I’ll break glass for a pattern. If I need to focus my mind, I’ll grind the glass edges to everything fits together puzzle-perfect. And absolutely nothing feels better than polishing a piece and hanging it in the window to catch some light. True accomplishment! WHAT IS ONE PIECE OF ADVICE YOU WOULD SHARE WITH OTHER ARTISTS + MAKERS?Just make; try things! Don’t sweat the mistakes or finished projects you don’t love.
