WHAT IS ONE PIECE OF ADVICE YOU WOULD SHARE WITH OTHER ARTISTS + MAKERS? Treat other artists and makers as peers, not competition.Encouragement builds, and meanness kills young artists’ confidence. Everything you make is completely unique, even within the same mediums.The more that is spread around, the more the appreciation for crafted goods grows in your community. Your hands can only make so many things, and so can theirs. So build each other up and help grow the arts together with kindness. Make the world more beautiful and help others on that path. Sharon Blaine Turner is an award winning Doll Artist from the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains in upstate South Carolina. She comes from a long line of mountain artists and craftsmen who have left her with a rich heritage; one in which she has developed into her own unique style of doll making. DESCRIBE YOUR PROCESS. My dolls are completely handmade, including the face painting. I let the dolls come to life as I progress in creating, rarely sure of what direction they will take. WHAT INSPIRES YOU? I get inspired mostly by colors and prints I see in fabric. Growing up I was afraid and fascinated by puppets, especially marionettes. So I’ve always gravitated toward anything whimsical and vibrant. FUN FACT ABOUT YOU. I cannot pass an animal of any kind without striking up a conversation. FAVORITE THING ABOUT DOWNTOWN AUGUSTA. I love going to dinner and a show at the Miller or Imperial Theaters. The architecture of those buildings is amazing! WHY DO YOU LOVE TO DESIGN, CREATE + MAKE? I was born with it. I cannot remember a time in my life when I wasn’t creating something. It’s an ingrained part of who I am. It’s what makes me happy. Jessica Lopez (JLo) is the Owner/Artist of xoxoJLo Crochet. A Columbia, SC native, Jessica started her “love affair” with crochet in 2010 and has been HOOKED ever since. A former public school teacher for over a decade, she made a career change to full-time artist in June of 2021. JLo prides herself on creating high-quality, whimsical, weird, handcrafted and, “heart-made,” items that are sure to give years of smiles and love to everyone. Her mission is to “spread happiness, one stitch at a time.” Grateful to be living the artist life, JLo often donates pieces and/or portions of her sales to local and regional fundraisers/charities that support causes close to her heart including: women’s rights, LGBTQ+ rights, no-kill animal shelters, mental health and causes benefiting chronic illness/disabilities, including muscular dystrophy, which Jessica has a form of. I love to make fun, bright and colorful creations that evoke a sense of joy. I make creations that I know “little me” would have loved, and that kids of ALL ages (0-101!) will enjoy and cherish for many years. I usually crochet in a calm space surrounded by lo-fi music, a locally sourced candle, some coffee and either a podcast or audiobook. This helps me get in the “crochet zone” so I can let the pieces flow as I create. WHAT INSPIRES YOU? A lot of what I make is with the early childhood ages in mind. After teaching Pre-K for over a decade, I still wanted to be able to connect with kids. I feel my creations help me do just that. I’m inspired to create heirloom quality pieces kids can have for years, as well as toys that provide experiences of learning through play, such as pretend food, and reusable crocheted water balloons. We start with bare wood (much of it recycled from something else), turn and glue each strip of wood together, and let the grain lead me to a pattern. That’s what makes all board unique. WHAT INSPIRES YOU? All the different types of woods work differently together and it’s interesting to see how every project will turn out. FUN FACT ABOUT YOU. I was born in Augusta and I’ve lived in Hephzibah expect for the five years we lived in Marietta. I craft full time but on the first Tuesday I conduct foreclosure auctions in Eastern Georgia. DESCRIBE YOUR PROCESS. I began sewing in 2014 after our grand daughter was born. In 2015 I purchased my single needle embroidery machine (Archie) to monogram and do some Applique’s for my granddaughter. Itching to do bigger projects, my husband encouraged me to purchase my multi needle embroidery machine (Edith). This completely changed my capabilities and I moved into creating key fobs and finger puppets and haven’t stopped discovering new items. It’s been a fun creative journey. WHAT INSPIRES YOU? Many things inspire me, a change of season or a visit to a fabric store. I’ve also been inspired by some really talented designers and other embroiders. I’ve been blessed to attend two different sewing/embroidery trade show where meeting like minded people have also given me great inspiration. FUN FACT ABOUT YOU. My business name was inspired in part by Vince Dooley’s wife, Barbara. I saw her a women in business conference many years ago and she discussed that she wanted her grand children to call her Honey, not Grandma or Nana. It was an idea that I used when I was blessed with our first of three grand children. When I needed a business name it was a perfect fit. Also I have a twin brother and my oldest sister blessed us with a niece when we were less than two months old, so we often say we were raised as triplets. FAVORITE THING ABOUT DOWNTOWN AUGUSTA. I love seeing how Downtown Augusta has reinvented and revitalized itself. I know it has included the work and effort of many business owners and they have done an amazing job of keeping Augusta thriving. WHY DO YOU LOVE TO DESIGN, CREATE + MAKE? My favorite thing to do is paint, which I don’t sell but it relaxes me perfectly. I also really love for a customer to say “do you….”, and get the chance to do something I’ve never done before. I have sewn a prom dress in a day (to much pressure,lol), made covers for glasses for a young girl with eye issues, and sewn several specific outfits for first time birthdays. It’s always fun to help someone’s ideas come to life.WHAT IS ONE PIECE OF ADVICE YOU WOULD SHARE WITH OTHER ARTISTS + MAKERS? Enjoy what you do. Some people will love what you do and others might not, don’t take it personally.
