I am a ceramicist based in Greenville, SC. I received my BFA from Alfred University in Alfred, NY concentrating in ceramics and painting. I currently work for two different ceramic artists as their assistant. Creating whimsical and unique ceramic pieces is my passion. DESCRIBE YOUR PROCESS.I throw and alter forms that are simultaneously delicate and robust. I use underglaze to intuitively decorate each piece with pattern, relatable imagery, and subtle humor. I then brush/ dip glaze over the piece and it’s fired to cone 6. WHAT INSPIRES YOU?I get inspiration from my pen and ink illustrations and my paintings that focus on the female figure. I also have many shelves of mugs in my studio that I’ve bought or did art trades for that inspire me. FUN FACT ABOUT YOU.I love listening to audiobooks while I work! It’s how I process the world around me. WHAT IS ONE PIECE OF ADVICE YOU WOULD SHARE WITH OTHER ARTISTS + MAKERS?Whenever something doesn’t work out, like a piece broke or you were rejected from a show, there is always something to learn from it. LINDSEY DAVIS punch needle and painted artwork Meet The Artist WHO ARE YOU, WHERE ARE YOU FROM, & WHAT DO YOU DO?I grew up in Savannah, but have spent most of my adult life in Rome, GA. I was a professor of chemistry at Berry College there until last year when my husband and I moved to Augusta. I’m now part time at AU, which allows me time to paint and punch needle. DESCRIBE YOUR PROCESS.Sometimes I start the process knowing what I want to paint or punch needle, and other times, I know what colors I want to use and go from there. I research the main focal point and I do a few sketches until I’m happy with what I have. For punch needle, I typically do one layer of paint before I start the punch needle parts and once I’m done punching, I’ll go back in with paint and add more layers until the cloth is covered. WHAT INSPIRES YOU?Most of my work is inspired by nature or somewhere I’ve traveled. My happiest moments in life are typically when I’m either outside or traveling (ideally both). I’ve also always been really fascinated with maps, so that has become a part of my art as well. FUN FACT ABOUT YOU.I have over 8 years of experience in puppetry. A few years ago, I played the part of Milky White in my community theater’s production of the musical, “Into the Woods.” Milky White is a cow and it involved wearing a backpack and moooooving around on stilts. FAVORITE THING ABOUT DOWNTOWN AUGUSTA.I really like all of the local shops. For example, my favorite store downtown is Art on Broad. The owners are so lovely and I enjoy seeing the work of local artists. WHY DO YOU LOVE TO DESIGN, CREATE + MAKE?Until recently, my creative efforts have always been dedicated to chemistry. My research specialty is in the design and synthesis of molecules for use in pharmaceuticals. I’ve never had the time to focus this creative energy in a more traditional “artistic” effort. I love that mistakes don’t matter. I can paint over it or re-punch that area. It’s nice to play around and have fun knowing that these artistic “experiments” are really just that – fun! WHAT IS ONE PIECE OF ADVICE YOU WOULD SHARE WITH OTHER ARTISTS + MAKERS?I would advise others not to take themselves so seriously. It’s hard to do when one’s identity is being an artist. My name is Becca and I am an artist and educator from Augusta. I make colorful and sometimes functional fine art, often including plants, home decor and patterns. DESCRIBE YOUR PROCESS. I use two main art mediums so I have two fairly distinct process. For painting, I use oil paint and like to build up with lots of layers often starting with a bright pink base coat. I add layers of color schemes, loose marks and patterns to each of my paintings in hopefully unexpected but balanced ways. For ceramics, each piece is thrown on the potters wheel with stoneware clay. then I add layers of modeled clay, and underglaze patterns to build up my pieces, similarly to my paintings. I add layers of glazes to each. I love to experiment at this step! Each piece is fired in a kiln twice and is food safe. WHAT INSPIRES YOU? I am often inspired by home decor accounts on instagram and walks through antiques store. I love to play with sentimental color schemes and objects. I am also immensely inspired by leave and plants so I vistit local greenhouses often. FUN FACT ABOUT YOU. I spent most of college perfecting my chocolate chip cookie recipe and I personally think they are the best! FAVORITE THING ABOUT DOWNTOWN AUGUSTA. I love the food and coffee option. Personally Buona coffee and Pizza Joint are my favorites. WHY DO YOU LOVE TO DESIGN, CREATE + MAKE? Art and making has been ingrained in me since birth and I always have that “itch” to get into the studio and try something new. Art is vital to how I and many communicate. I love that I am able to spread joy and happiness through my work. WHAT IS ONE PIECE OF ADVICE YOU WOULD SHARE WITH OTHER ARTISTS + MAKERS? Simply begin. Most people are worried about it not looking a certain way or that they haven’t been “good at it” before. But that is not really the point of art. Art should be more similar to play and exploration. By filling a page with repeated lines, shapes, and colors, I’m able to find order and calm my busy mind. I create minimalist abstract paintings using a variety of media as well as hand-built ceramic work decorated with Zentangles. WHAT INSPIRES YOU?I draw inspiration from patterns found on vintage textiles and Indian block prints, the bold organic cutouts of Henri Matisse, and the striking yet minimalist geometric paintings of Frank Stella. I grew up in New York City, but have made Augusta my home for over 25 years now. While I’ve been making jewelry off and on for decades, I have been a full-time jewelry artist, metalsmith and enamelist for about 15 years. DESCRIBE YOUR PROCESS. Sometimes I plan out my designs, and sometimes I just start playing around with various raw materials (sterling silver, copper and bronze/brass sheet and wire, gemstones, etc.) until they “speak” and tell me what they want to be. I use both traditional and modern metalworking techniques such as piercing, forging, fold-forming, riveting and soldering. I create, by hand, most every part of my jewelry, from the overall design elements down to the settings and findings. The exception is my “vintage collage” line, for which I use various metalsmithing techniques to transform the old into something fresh and new. My enamel work is both kiln and torch fired on copper. My pieces are unique and truly one of a kind.. WHAT INSPIRES YOU? I am inspired by people, nature, architecture, classic jazz and rock music, and modern and abstract art. I am very drawn to, and love to create, textures. The combination of the visual and the tactile excites me! FUN FACT ABOUT YOU. I am fascinated by words and language. If I’m not in my studio playing with metal and fire, I’m probably doing the New York Times Crossword puzzle. I usually finish the Sunday in about an hour.st. FAVORITE THING ABOUT DOWNTOWN AUGUSTA. I was always drawing, painting or making jewelry out of whatever materials I could get my hands on (electrical wire scraps and paper clips, origami paper, buttons, etc.). It is deeply satisfying to successfully bring an image from my mind into reality. I cannot imagine a life without creating. It is truly my calling. Then, I tend to pick out the animal, colors and materials I want to use on a piece but, a lot of it is spontaneous. I find that I’m more satisfied leaning on intuition in my work.
