VITAL WOODWORKS

VITAL WOODWORKS handmade wood housewares + gifts @vitalwoodwork Meet The Artist WHO ARE YOU, WHERE ARE YOU FROM, & WHAT DO YOU DO?I’m a relatively new woodworker and full-time Occupational Therapist. Originally from West Virginia, I’ve lived in Augusta for 32 years. DESCRIBE YOUR PROCESS.I enjoy using both hand tools and modern power tools. I often see the shape of the finished product in the natural wood I’m working with. Many of my pieces are made for use in home music studios and are made from poplar wood. I suntan the poplar to help darken and enhance the natural grain of the wood. WHAT INSPIRES YOU?I am inspired by the shapes and colors found in nature. I love wood with lots of knots, grain, pattern and even things that some might consider defects. FUN FACT ABOUT YOU.I’m a drummer and love kayaking. FAVORITE THING ABOUT DOWNTOWN AUGUSTA.The interesting old buildings that are being renovated and repurposed. WHY DO YOU LOVE TO DESIGN, CREATE + MAKE?I believe God has given everyone a creative desire and the ability to appreciate beauty. It’s wonderful to make something beautiful or functional for people to use and enjoy. WHAT IS ONE PIECE OF ADVICE YOU WOULD SHARE WITH OTHER ARTISTS + MAKERS?Don’t be afraid to make what you like. You don’t need to do what others are doing (unless that’s what you like to make). RETURN TO VENDOR PAGE

KARLY RAE CERAMICS handmade pottery – mugs, tumblers, berry bowls, spoon rests, + planters @karlyraeceramics @karlyrae.ceramics karlyraeceramics.com Meet The Artist WHO ARE YOU, WHERE ARE YOU FROM, & WHAT DO YOU DO? My name is Karly French, I am from Alpharetta, GA and I am a potter. DESCRIBE YOUR PROCESS. I create simple ceramic goods on the pottery wheel. I take a lump of clay and turn it into a functional piece whether it’s a mug, berry bowl, planter, etc. Every piece goes through two kiln firings and a trimming, handling and glazing process between those firings. A small batch of work typically takes 3-4 weeks. WHAT INSPIRES YOU? Ceramics inspires me. The art of creating something out of nothing is very fulfilling to me. I am inspired by a simple, farmhouse look. I think it is timeless. I like neutral colors, I don’t want to color of my pieces to take away from the body and beauty of my pieces. Sometimes, less is more. FUN FACT ABOUT YOU. I was an equestrian in college WHY DO YOU LOVE TO DESIGN, CREATE + MAKE? Pottery is my escape. It is mentally therapeutic and just makes me happy. I have always been creative and loved art, but something about getting my hands dirty and making pretty things is just the best. WHAT IS ONE PIECE OF ADVICE YOU WOULD SHARE WITH OTHER ARTISTS + MAKERS? If you have a passion for something, go for it! It doesn’t matter what it is, make it happen. Your life is so much better when you incorporate time for things you love. I am a work from home mom with a fulltime job, so this is my side hustle. It gets me through and makes me a better mom and person because I am happier when I also get to do what I love. RETURN TO VENDOR PAGE
Wildly Urban

WILDLY URBAN Handcrafted wood wall hangings, air plant, + suncatchers @wildlyurban @wildlyurban wildlyurbanco.com Meet The maker WHO ARE YOU, WHERE ARE YOU FROM, & WHAT DO YOU DO?Hi, I’m Carrie! I live in Rock Hill, SC and have been making one of a kind wood air plant hangers since 2017. DESCRIBE YOUR PROCESS.Each piece begins with salvaged wood, scraps of wood from local woodworkers, wood from construction dumpsters or leftover pieces from various home projects. These pieces get sawn to a workable thickness on my table saw, then I draw out shapes and cut out each piece by hand on my bandsaw, drill holes for hanging hardware, sanded smooth and oiled with a beeswax/orange oil blend to enhance the natural color and woodgrain. WHAT INSPIRES YOU?Nature and our surroundings play a big part in inspiring my work. In some cases, the inspiration is obvious like my moon phase pieces, and others are a little more abstract. FUN FACT ABOUT YOU.My husband and I just bought a sailboat. FAVORITE THING ABOUT DOWNTOWN AUGUSTA.The riverfront and the charming small businesses around town have me looking forward to visiting the area for the first time. WHY DO YOU LOVE TO DESIGN, CREATE + MAKE?It’s an expression of myself and what I love. Creating the pieces is a soothing and almost meditative experience. Seeing the pieces come together is exciting and I get giddy when I think up a new design. And then when customers see my pieces and connect with one or more of them, their eyes light up, they gasp in aw, that brings me pure joy! WHAT IS ONE PIECE OF ADVICE YOU WOULD SHARE WITH OTHER ARTISTS + MAKERS?Creativity comes and goes in waves, and that’s ok. RETURN TO VENDOR PAGE
SMOKE + HONEY DESIGN

SMOKE + HONEY DESIGNS hand crafted minimalist stationary and home decor @smokeandhoneydesign smokeandhoneydesign Meet The artist WHO ARE YOU, WHERE ARE YOU FROM, & WHAT DO YOU DO? Hi! I’m Brittany Carr and I have lived in the Augusta area for about 2 years now. My husband and I adore it here. When I’m not creating at home, I’m a barista and FOH lead at my favorite coffee shop, Trellis Coffeebar. DESCRIBE YOUR PROCESS. I love creating physically rather than digitally. I typically start with messy sketches just to get my ideas onto paper, then finalize them in ink. Next, I use either gauche or watercolor to bring my drawings to life. WHAT INSPIRES YOU? So often, my favorite pieces are inspired by laughter. My husband or a loved one comes up with a silly idea or joke that I portray on paper. My illustrations are meant to illicit joy. I love doing this through humor and simple beauty. FUN FACT ABOUT YOU. I want to be a children’s book author/illustrator! FAVORITE THING ABOUT DOWNTOWN AUGUSTA. If I could choose one spot to spend my time in downtown Augusta, it would be at The Book Tavern. Give it a visit! You won’t regret it. WHY DO YOU LOVE TO DESIGN, CREATE + MAKE? I believe that creating is a part of human nature. We’re all made to cultivate something. When I am painting, I feel such deep joy, peace, and satisfaction. It’s one of my greatest honors to get to share those feelings with others when they enjoy and view my art. WHAT IS ONE PIECE OF ADVICE YOU WOULD SHARE WITH OTHER ARTISTS + MAKERS? Make what you love! Your audience is out there somewhere. Just keep creating what brings you delight. RETURN TO VENDOR PAGE
RUA WOODCARVING

RUA WOODCARVING hand carved wood accessories & home goods @ruawoodcarving Meet The maker WHO ARE YOU, WHERE ARE YOU FROM, & WHAT DO YOU DO?My name is Ben, and I’ve recently moved to the area from Ireland. I enjoy working with my hands and am currently renovating a house. DESCRIBE YOUR PROCESS.I try to avoid power tools as much as possible and like to focus on the feel of the hand tools as I work. I like to experiment with my own pigments and dyes, and prefer natural finishes on my works. WHAT INSPIRES YOU?Nature is a huge influence on me. I have yet to settle on a theme since I arrived here, but in Ireland the ocean was a very large influence on my work. FUN FACT ABOUT YOU.I’ve lived in four different countries, but it took someone local to this area to finally get me to settle down. FAVORITE THING ABOUT DOWNTOWN AUGUSTA.I love the variety of shops, eateries, theatres, and events Augusta always seems to offer. It keeps me coming back for more. WHY DO YOU LOVE TO DESIGN, CREATE + MAKE?Primarily, it’s the process of carving and whittling that I love. Frequently, I don’t have an actual design, instead allowing the wood to dictate what the eventual piece will be. Knots, grains, spalting, etc play a big role in the final appearance. The process itself is, for me, like a form of meditation. WHAT IS ONE PIECE OF ADVICE YOU WOULD SHARE WITH OTHER ARTISTS + MAKERS?Be forgiving to yourself for mistakes you make. Your idea of a mistake is often someone else’s idea of beauty. And, don’t worry if creativity seems stifled at times. Go out and do something you enjoy and you’ll find that creativity comes back to you. RETURN TO VENDOR PAGE
