SARAH ONKEN ART

SARAH ONKEN ART local art @sarahonken_art Meet The Artist WHO ARE YOU, WHERE ARE YOU FROM, & WHAT DO YOU DO?Currently based in the Augusta area, I enjoy capturing some of the beautiful, often fleeting, scenes we pass in life to create something that is lovely and lasting. DESCRIBE YOUR PROCESS.I studied ballet and art, and, after working primarily with charcoal and oil paint since 2008, I now favor the vibrant colors and the sweeping, almost dance-like, motions that feel unique to pastel. WHAT INSPIRES YOU? Inspired by both the complexity and simplicity found in nature and life, my art hints at carefully selected detail but, above all, focuses on the feeling of a particular scene–peaceful windows into nature that hopefully bring a moment of pause into an ever evolving, revolving world. FUN FACT ABOUT YOU.I painted almost daily throughout my preteen years—my mother had told me about an artist that painted over 100 paintings before they did one they loved. I was hopeful it would happen much quicker for me, haha, and, truthfully, I cherished many terrible paintings over the years. FAVORITE THING ABOUT DOWNTOWN AUGUSTA. Easy, the colorful murals! WHY DO YOU LOVE TO DESI WHY DO YOU LOVE TO DESIGN, CREATE + MAKE?I feel like it allows me to turn my thoughts and perceptions into something tangible to hopefully be enjoyed by others—it feels like a very basic form of communication to me. WHAT IS ONE PIECE OF ADVICE YOU WOULD SHARE WITH OTHER ARTISTS + MAKERS?Don’t be too concerned about trends. RETURN TO VENDOR PAGE

ODD TREE POTTERY

ODD TREE POTTERY functional handmade ceramics @burlandbarrelcoa @OddTreePottery @odd.tree.pottery etsy.com/shop/OddTreePottery Meet The Artist WHO ARE YOU, WHERE ARE YOU FROM, & WHAT DO YOU DO?I’m Kacee Reed and I am originally from up north- born in Virginia but grew up mostly in Maryland. I have decided to focus strictly on pottery (yay!) and music in this chapter of my life. I’m also a mother to a vibrant four year old! DESCRIBE YOUR PROCESS.I source my ingredients locally when possible and use natural and organic materials to make amazing products. I I throw most all of my pieces on a pottery wheel and then adorn them in underglaze for my favorite part of my process- Sgraffito! This is a technique which includes scratching or carving into the clay. I am looking forward to exploring other areas of clay and playing in it for some time to come, but right now I’m swimming a Sgraffito deep dive and I am LOVING it! WHAT INSPIRES YOU?My inspiration comes from mostly nature, love in all forms, and family. FUN FACT ABOUT YOU.My family was stationed in Germany for 7 years. FAVORITE THING ABOUT DOWNTOWN AUGUSTA. I love the diversity of people and personalities you run into while out and about downtown. I also love the food! WHY DO YOU LOVE TO DESIGN, CREATE + MAKE?Creating is my way of sharing love with the rest of the world, especially when it’s in the form of pottery and home-cooked meals. It’s therapeutic to me. I also love how everyone is capable of creating, and I marvel at all the different things that are created! It’s never-ending. WHAT IS ONE PIECE OF ADVICE YOU WOULD SHARE WITH OTHER ARTISTS + MAKERS?I feel like certain advice can be applied at different periods of creators’ journeys. Right now, some advice I’m taking myself is to enjoy the uniqueness of what’s created, never take for granted the human-ness of the piece (the parts that you can clearly see a human did- they are the most beautiful to me), and don’t try to meet anyone’s mark but your own! KATIE KAMEEN

KATIE KAMEEN jewelry + wearable sculptures katiekameen.com @katiekameen @katiekameen Meet The Maker Katie Kameen creates jewelry by playfully experimenting with premade plastic objects. Kameen received her BFA in 3D Studio from Eastern Illinois University, and her MFA in Metalsmithing and Jewelry Design from Indiana University in Bloomington, Indiana. Kameen has shown her work at the Appalachian Center for Craft in Smithville, Tennessee, the Center on Contemporary Art in Seattle, Washington, Site: Brooklyn Gallery in Brooklyn, New York, and in many exhibitions across the country. Kameen was awarded the Ethical Metalsmiths Student Committee Emerging Artist Award in 2017. Her work has been published in American Craft Magazine, Friend of the Artist, and Uppercase Magazine. Kameen has exhibited internationally at venues including Kunstnerforbundet Gallery in Oslo, Norway, Galerie Marzee in Nijmegen, Netherlands, and Talente 2017 in Munich, Germany. Kameen is currently part time faculty at University of South Carolina Aiken and Augusta University. In my work I explore the ways in which premade materials can communicate with us. Our use and treatment of everyday objects mirrors our social behavior. I draw from that to create my own path to understanding intimate and casual human connection. My process mimics a type of play as I discover how plastic objects can be reformed into oddly familiar configurations. These recognizable forms and individual components evoke a shared haptic experience, relating both to memory and the immediate objects that surround us. Cheap plastics were made to serve a specific purpose, and to do so with a limited lifespan. I manipulate these objects to subvert both qualities, and make these materials, so often ignored from oversaturation, visible again. RETURN TO VENDOR PAGE
LITTLE GNOME CERAMICS

LITTLE GNOME CERAMICS ceramic art @littlegnomeceramics Meet The Maker WHO ARE YOU, WHERE ARE YOU FROM, & WHAT DO YOU DO?Mary Besel – I am a senior ceramics major at Augusta University and an aspiring professor. I come from a military family, so I don’t feel attached to any one place, but we have lived here in Augusta for the longest period of time. My favorite thing to do, of course, is to make work and be in the studio, but I also play dnd and host games for my friends. DESCRIBE YOUR PROCESS.My process usually entails making one form over and over again in different variations. I make figurative pieces that provoke a sense of life, a little personality and story of their own, and that process encourages it. I begin to create species of figures where each is unique in their own way, but still part of a recognizable group, just like humans or animals. WHAT INSPIRES YOU?I am deeply inspired by fantasy, American and European Folklore, dollmaking, and the feeling of happiness that I get while working with clay. I try to incorporate all of those things into the final product of my work. FUN FACT ABOUT YOU.I don’t have a middle name! FAVORITE THING ABOUT DOWNTOWN AUGUSTA.I love the initiative to create more public art around Downtown. WHY DO YOU LOVE TO DESIGN, CREATE + MAKE?To me it is calming. It is one of the ways that I am able to cope with anxiety and I have found a great purpose in being able to bring life into my work with ceramics.
