I love making a wide variety of art (from textiles to photography!), but since I stumbled across ceramics I haven’t been able to stop. My older brother, Arendil, is a full-time musician and soapmaker on the side, using crafting techniques passed down from our mother. Both of us were born in Tucson, AZ, but raised in Augusta! DESCRIBE YOUR PROCESS.G: I focus on making wheel thrown and slipcasted pottery designed for everyday functional ware. I illustrate my work using underglaze and carving techniques and use hand-formulated glazes fired to cone 6. I also make slab-constructed soap dishes for my brother’s soaps, each imprinted with a special design. My favorite part of the process is drawing on the surface of the clay- I will spend hours carving and glazing tiny details into every piece! A: For the soap, we first measure out all the ingredients required to make the soap, this includes the oils, water, and salts (KOH, NaOH). We melt the oils in a crockpot and make a solution from the salts and water. We then combine the solution into the oils, which begins the process of saponification (or turning oils into soap). We blend them until the mixture is applesauce consistency, then let it cook on low heat and stir occasionally. WHAT INSPIRES YOU?G: I am inspired by nature, animals, and animation! I love trying to recapture the essence of an animal or show that I enjoy in my own style. When I have a finished piece, what keeps me going is seeing other people’s reactions in finding a piece they resonate with. The best part is the exploration and constant development that comes with making art! WHAT IS ONE PIECE OF ADVICE YOU WOULD SHARE WITH OTHER ARTISTS + MAKERS?G: Carry a journal or sketchbook with you AT ALL TIMES! Never neglect to write anything down! Sketching/writing down ideas, inspirations, or parts of your process will help you in the future so much! I have a 10 day limit in any one place before stir-crazy sets in and my energy makes everyone around me feel crazy too! Exploration inspires art, it keeps my spirit free, and enables me to share with many people. Anyone can watch art created through a screen. I get to share it in real life situations. I’m Samantha, an animal loving artist from Augusta, GA. I hand paint custom pet portraits for fellow pet lovers like me! DESCRIBE YOUR PROCESS. Painted Pets are realistic styled portraits and each one is custom made. When creating a portrait, I typically print a picture out for a size reference and take measurements of the pet’s profile to sketch an outline. I then mix acrylic paints to find the pet’s correct color shades. I paint a base, then add shading, apply a top coat, and finish it off with some detailing. WHAT INSPIRES YOU? Born and raised in Evans, Ga but currently living in Augusta with my husband and our two children. I have a 3 year old named Ruthie, a 1 year old named Judson, and we have a new puppy named Sunny! It is the biggest blessing of my life to be able to stay home with them while simultaneously working on my pressed flower frames. DESCRIBE YOUR PROCESS.To create a pressed flower frame whether it be a wedding bouquet or simple botanical design takes anywhere from 5-7 to complete. I receive the bouquet and deconstruct a majority of the flowers into flower presses so they will retain their shape and color as best as possible. Once the flowers have completely dried I will then begin to reconstruct each flower petal by petal and then start designing the frame! Once the frame is secure it will be a piece of art that will remain beautiful for a lifetime. Sharon Blaine Turner is an award winning Doll Artist from the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains in upstate South Carolina. She comes from a long line of mountain artists and craftsmen who have left her with a rich heritage; one in which she has developed into her own unique style of doll making. DESCRIBE YOUR PROCESS. My dolls are completely handmade, including the face painting. I let the dolls come to life as I progress in creating, rarely sure of what direction they will take. WHAT INSPIRES YOU? I get inspired mostly by colors and prints I see in fabric. Growing up I was afraid and fascinated by puppets, especially marionettes. So I’ve always gravitated toward anything whimsical and vibrant. FUN FACT ABOUT YOU. I cannot pass an animal of any kind without striking up a conversation. FAVORITE THING ABOUT DOWNTOWN AUGUSTA. I love going to dinner and a show at the Miller or Imperial Theaters. The architecture of those buildings is amazing! WHY DO YOU LOVE TO DESIGN, CREATE + MAKE? I was born with it. I cannot remember a time in my life when I wasn’t creating something. It’s an ingrained part of who I am. It’s what makes me happy.
